Protecting Your Original/Fan Property

I know there's a lot of people out there with original characters and concepts, and I'd like to give a few tips on protecting them. As we all know, there are dangers to posting your work on public sites or forums. But there are ways that you can protect yourself.

Official writers of television shows like Star Trek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer will scour the internet for ideas for shows when they're lacking some of their own (as read in many TV Guide interviews). So even if you don't consider yourself a very good writer you could be inspiring the route of events in a series or have a character of yours taken without credit. So it doesn't only happen in the all seeing interweb, it does move to the outside world and not only only is original work at risk.

Mailing yourself something to have it postmarked. If you are worried about giving up a portion of your intellectual properties by posting them on a public site, you can copyright protect your online properties through the copyright.org site. If you can't afford the fee, then you can use the use of public sites to your advantage as a dater. This way you can sue for plagiarism demand credit, financial restitution, or the complete halt in production of said materials. You may not be able to protect fan materials with copyrights but you can still protect it as being your idea.

My recomendation? Until you're self-publishing or have your services picked up by a reputable distributer (either online or otherwise), only reveal from 20% to 40% percent of your basic idea to people other than those mutually involved. In finding a reputable distributer, or are commissioned or offered a place with one, always ask for references before you pitch your idea.
